Flowing in a massive arc through western North Carolina is the Class II-IV French Broad River. The French Broad is one of the oldest rivers in the world, as evident by its wide basin. Spectacular views of Pisgah National Forest and family-friendly rapids are what you'll find on the free-flowing French Broad. The French Broad River is open to rafters as young as 8 years old.

The whitewater section of the French Broad begins about 25 miles north of Asheville, NC. In the 8 miles of whitewater, you can expect to paddle through big waves, past large, smooth rocks. You'll know you've reached the end of the whitewater section when you hit Frank Bell's Rapid, where the river narrows to create an exciting Class IV run.

Because the French Broad is a free-flowing river, you can expect water levels to vary greatly throughout the year. Raft the French Broad from April to October. Typically, higher water levels are present in the spring.
